Nació el 21 de Agosto de 1927, en Salt Lake City, Utah. Hijo de G. Spencer e Gladys Condie Monson.

Trabajó en tiempo parcial  con su padre en Western Hotel Register Company, una empresa gráfica. Este trabajo fue una predicción de su futura carrera en la industria de la imprenta.

7 de Octubre de 1948, se casó con Frances Beverly Johnson en el templo de Salt Lake City.
